Kirk is an empath, highly sensitive person, highly educated and experienced therapist. He tries to bring those things into his sessions and collaborate with his client on more than a superficial level. "I am direct. I am honest with my patients. I tell you what I think. I welcome open dialogue. I believe in telling you the truth and empowering my patients." Kirk was born and raised in St. Catherine, Jamaica. He moved to Pasadena California, at age 15 with his parents and 3 sisters. He attended Pasadena High and went on to get his bachelor’s in psychology from the University of California, Riverside. After undergrad he worked in local communities providing community support to children and families. He decided to pursue a masters in social work from a university that matched his ethics, values and beliefs through a cultural lens that integrates both diversity and a client-centered approach and so he chose to attend Howard University for his master’s in social work and graduated in 2007. After working in community mental health, he recognized that he also had a passion both for clinical work and advocacy and therefore decided to pursue a master’s in international human rights and international law from American University and his juris doctorate from Valparaiso University. He has worked as a clinical social worker in the areas of foster-care, child welfare, juvenile justice, investigations, and community mental health for most of his career. He specializes in Anxiety, Depression, PTSD, Adjustment Disorders, and ADHD. He uses tools from various theories such as DBT, EMDR CBT, TF-CBT, Polyvagal Theory, Mindfulness, and Breathwork. He practices in Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. His main office is in Lanham, MD but hopes to open a DC office very soon. His dream is to run a thriving practice that values empathy, compassion and social justice. He believes in the importance of integrating psychotherapy, physical fitness and nutrition. He lives in DC with his partner and enjoys classical music, hiking, cooking, and spending time with family in the states and Jamaica.

Are you a highly sensitive person? I’m an HSP myself and have been described as, super-sensitive, thin-skinned, meek, kind and shy. While it may not always feel this way, I want you to know that I believe that strong feelings, deep thinking, and being highly attuned are great gifts we should embrace.
